Right Hip Update

I am back with a modest update on my right hip labral tear recovery. I have just passed the seven-week mark from the date of surgery, but yet, I am still considered to be in the early recovery stages. My surgery date was May 31, 2023. I was taking some form of required prescription medication all the way through July 12—six whole weeks.

Overall, this has been a strange, disorienting rehab experience. Unlike my ankle surgery, I was instructed to put some weight on my right leg right after the surgical procedure. I essentially walked out of the surgery center, with the assistance of crutches (and, eventually, a wheelchair). I started physical therapy on June 5, and I have been told to increase my overall movement and intensity of daily exercise steadily each and every week. However, I have experienced some modest pain quite consistently since the surgery, and I often cannot walk very far without getting quite tired. It wasn’t until the weekend of July 14-16 that I started feeling noticeable improvement in terms of pain and strength.

The surgery for my left hip is scheduled for August 23, so the plan is to get my right leg as strong as possible before doing this all over again on the other side.

Lovely.

Everyone is optimistic that I will be running again before the year is out, so that is good news. Still, I’ve grown weary of these long training interruptions—and of surgery in general.

I’ve been occupying my time with a good deal of reading, which I will outline for posterity. I am also hoping that I will soon force myself to take drum lessons again, which is something that I have been threatening to do for a very long time.

Also, I still need to toy with the formatting of this blog. It saddens me to say that I am no longer thrilled with the Astra theme’s functionality. It’s much more limited than it should be for blogging. Since I don’t blog regularly, though, I will figure out a way to live with it.

I hope you will as well.
